HISTORY

After independence in 1957, workers were organised under a central trade union and given powers under the Industrial Relations Act, 1958 to negotiate, enforce collective agreements, and defend their interests in all establishments. It therefore became not only logical but also imperative that employers should come together to enhance and protect their interests as well as provide a forum for consultation among themselves and share experiences, hence the GEA was formed in 1959.

SOURCES OF FUNDS

The Association is a non-profit making organisation. Its main source of revenue is derived from the payment of annual subscription and fees from human capital development courses programmes organised for members. In certain cases, special contributions are levied on members to assist the Association to purchase some major capital items. Other sources of funds are donations from both local and foreign organisations.

PUBLICATION

The GEA monthly news flash is a monthly review of the activities of the Association, the Council and the Secretariat, including matters deliberated on by the Council and important decisions taken. In this connection, Government accords it the right of selecting and nominating representatives to boards, councils and corporate bodies especially in the area of human capital development, social development and protection, productivity and incomes, employee relations, people management, occupational health and safety and environment etc.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The GEA has also succeeded over the years in establishing the reputation of being very well informed about the needs of employers, has effectively synthesized, harmonized and accurately represented the views of an otherwise scattered business community which sometimes hold conflicting, if not competing, positions on economic policy and issues affecting management-labour relations.

Another important achievement of the GEA is its contribution to the promotion of sound industrial relations, by advising members of their obligation to adopt good management policies and practices, interpreting labour laws and regulations, assisting members in negotiating collective agreements, creating a safe and congenial working environment, and showing concern for the welfare of their employees; a peaceful industrial relations atmosphere has thus been created in the country.

Through training, conferences, courses, seminars, workshops; etc both local and international on improved management skills, especially in the field of industrial relations, human resource development and occupational safety and health, the GEA has sought to raise productivity and to build capacity of industry which is essential to the growth of industry and economic development.
